The New York Photo Festival

TOKYO- GA at NYPHOTO 2012

The New York Photo Festival opens today in Brooklyn. It’s a great event, and a good excuse to visit DUMBO, one of New York’s most beautiful neighborhoods. If you go, you should try to make time to check out Rice, an amazing restaurant in DUMBO. They have these soy meatballs that make me so happy to be a vegetarian. Yum.

Photo-based digitally drawn art illustration

Ever since I’ve begun working digitally I’ve found myself spending time thinking about what to call the work. Talking about a painting or a photograph can be so simple, the references are clear. But for some reason, commonly understood terms for digitally created work still don’t exist. I’ve leaned toward “illustration” as the correct term, but it doesn’t seem a perfect fit. “Digital art” seems to imply something more technically experimental . I’ve thought about just calling them “drawings”, but that seems to just ignore the digital aspect completely, and it just doesn’t ring true. Everything I do is “photo-based”, but they are so removed from the photographs that I feel they need something more.

So, I’m thinking, how about “Photo-based digitally drawn art illustration”? Catchy, no?
